


Using similar technology to what was used to create Darth Vader's harness, the upgraded physical capabilities of old Clone Troopers combined with their highly effective strategies learned from years of experience made these "phase zero" Dark Troopers a force to be reckoned with. The first phase of what would become the Dark Troopers were actually experiments with cybernetics on Clone Troopers, becoming the "Dark Troopers" of the Battlefront multiplayer games. While Dark Forces was their first appearance, the Dark Trooper project's history goes a little further than their debut appearance in this game. Naturally, Kyle proved to be utterly unstoppable as he slew the general and ended all means of Dark Trooper production by destroying the Arc Hammer, leading to the Emperor declaring the project as a catastrophic failure. In this Dark Trooper armor, Rom Mohc fought Kyle Katarn face-to-face as the final boss of Dark Forces. Over time, Rom Mohc would order for further development on the Dark Trooper project, enhancing the powerful droids to an even greater degree than previous models and allowing them to act as armored exoskeletons for capable pilots. In addition, these Dark Troopers are equipped with high volumes of ammunition, explosives and occasionally an ARC electrical casting weapon to disable electronics and shields. In-game, the Dark Troopers are tough opponents, possessing jetpacks and high durability, much like their counterparts in The Mandalorian. Commissioned by the Imperial general known as Rom Mohc, he ordered for a factory ship, the Arc Hammer, to develop and deploy scores of Dark Trooper droids for the Galactic Empire. One year after the destruction of the Death Star, Kyle is hired by the Rebellion to foil the continued manufacture and deployment of Dark Trooper droids, as even a small number of them can destroy an entire Rebel base.

He eventually becomes a major ally of Luke Skywalker, a relationship which carried over into the Legends novels, where Kyle would become the Jedi Academy's battlemaster. Over the course of the series, Kyle would learn he is a powerful Force-sensitive and begrudgingly become a Jedi. It follows ex-Imperial mercenary Kyle Katarn, a smuggler and sharpshooter who the Rebellion had previously hired to steal the plans to the Death Star. The first of a series spanning over a decade, Star Wars: Dark Forces is a first-person shooter developed by LucasArts, taking great inspiration from id Software's breakthrough hit, Doom.
